Great and relaxing stay

Smart Aparthotel with great facilities and location. Extremely helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble. Food pretty good, fruit selection fantastic. Would not hesitate to recommend and hope to return.

Tripadvisdor Review – April 2019

Fabulous short break

This is our third stay at la Pergola and was a lovely short break before the Easter rush. We upgraded to half board before we travelled and feel we got value for money. The hotel is very clean and the staff very friendly…

Tripadvisdor Review – April 2019

Wonderful

We stayed here whilst walking the GR221 for a little bit of luxury and that is exactly what we got. Watching the sunset made it extra special.

Booking Review – May 2019

Fantastic apartment and area

Plenty of space in our apartment, very clean with everything we needed, plenty of windows around the apartment letting in a lot of natural light.

Sunrises in the Serra de Tramuntana: hiking routes to beat the August heat

Sunrises in the Serra de Tramuntana: hiking routes to beat the August heat

There's a side of Mallorca that only exists between five and seven in the morning: the Serra de Tramuntana in half-light, the air still cool from the night, and the sea shifting colour as the sun climbs behind the mountains. In August, when midday heat sets in and the trails fill with both warmth and walkers, getting up early stops being a sacrifice and becomes the best way to enjoy the sierra — in silence, in soft light, with fresh legs before the thermometer climbs.

Why walk at first light

Setting off before sunrise has some very concrete advantages in high summer. Temperatures are several degrees lower than mid-morning, the stone paths — so characteristic of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 — haven't yet started to store heat, and you're far more likely to cross paths with a wild goat or a falcon than another group of hikers. In exchange, it's worth giving yourself some margin: bring a head torch for the first stretch, check the forecast the night before, and time your start so you reach the main viewpoint just as the sun comes up.

La Trapa, sunrise over Sa Dragonera

If there's one route built for watching the sunrise in the south-west of the island, it's La Trapa. The circular, moderately difficult route starts in Sant Elm — less than twenty minutes' drive from the hotel — and covers around 9 kilometres with an elevation gain of between 350 and 450 metres, depending on the variant, over roughly two and a half hours according to the official route data.

The path crosses the Vall de Sant Josep, where in the early nineteenth century a group of Trappist monks — expelled from France after the Revolution and later from Napoleonic-occupied territory — built the terraces and monastery that give the site its name in barely a decade. Since 1980, the estate has belonged to GOB (Grup Balear d'Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturalesa), which acquired it through a public subscription to prevent it being built on, and continues to restore the mill and the monastery ruins.

The final stretch, known as the Pas de sa Trapa, involves a short rocky scramble, but the reward comes quickly: from the Cap Fabioler viewpoint, the whole outline of Sa Dragonera comes into view, silhouetted at dawn against a still-grey sea before it catches fire in gold. Those wanting to extend the walk can descend to the Torre de Cala en Basset, a 16th-century watchtower right on the coast.

Before you set off

Proper walking shoes, enough water (there are no refreshment points along the way), sun cream for the walk back, and a light layer for the first stretch, before sunrise. If you'd prefer something shorter, or want other options in the area, our article on the best hiking routes in Andratx has more choices for different levels. For the wider context of the range, the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site brings together 90 kilometres of dry-stone paths linking villages, towers and viewpoints such as the one at La Trapa.

Back at La Pérgola

After a walk that starts before dawn, you'll typically be back by mid-morning, with plenty of time for a leisurely breakfast and a dip in the pool before the August heat truly sets in. Our rooms are made for that kind of rest, and our services team can help you plan the logistics of the walk, from transport to last-minute updates on trail conditions.
