Exploring the Village of Andratx and Its Old Town
The village of Andratx is a small gem nestled among the Tramontana mountains, surrounded by valleys of pine and almond trees. Considered one of the oldest villages in Mallorca, it encompasses six population centers: Andratx, Sa Coma, S'Arracó, the Port, Camp de Mar, and Sant Elm.
Combining the best of the sea and the mountains, this municipality is one of the most beautiful on the island, just 25 kilometers from Son Sant Joan Airport. If you're visiting as a couple, one of the best ways to explore it is by motorcycle, allowing you to discover the most interesting places and famous beaches.
The Old Town and Village of Andratx
Currently, about 10,000 inhabitants make up the small rural community of Andratx, built about four kilometers from the coast to protect the village from the continuous pirate attacks suffered back in the 16th century.
A situation common throughout the island led the inhabitants of that time to build watchtowers along the entire coast. In Andratx, there are up to ten of these preventive constructions from which to observe if danger approached by sea.
The narrow cobblestone streets of the Pantaleu neighborhood invite you to stroll and try to peek into the interiors of the houses. They also form the first population center in Andratx and are currently its old town.
Wandering through the area, you can visit the Church of Santa Maria de Andratx, the Town Hall, the Curia building, and the Tower of Son na Gaia or the Sa Gaieta windmills, which are not so central anymore but are worth visiting as they are among the most significant in the area.
The church, dating back to 1248, is particularly interesting because it preserves three very important altarpieces dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Sebastian. You can also admire the canvas known as the "Quadre des Moros" - painting of the Moors, in English - which depicts the Turkish landing that took place on August 2, 1578.
When it comes to dining or having a snack, Andratx is the ideal place because it offers a mix of traditional and modern restaurants serving typical Mallorcan dishes, as well as international recipes and fusion proposals.
The Port, a Must-Visit
At La Pérgola, we always set aside a special space for the port of Andratx, and for good reason. It is one of the most popular natural harbors for its beauty, surrounded by beaches and coves with crystal-clear waters and home to about 3,500 inhabitants.
Once a refuge for fishermen, the port has now become one of Mallorca's favorite tourist centers.
It's a destination with intense nautical activity, with over 500 moorings for sports and recreational boats, and a sailing club. In the port, you'll find shopping areas, daytime and nighttime entertainment, and sunshine. Additionally, the mix of cultures found here gives it a cosmopolitan atmosphere, reflected in many establishments in the area.
In Andratx you will find La Pérgola, and we would love to have you visit us. Would you like to know more about this luxury aparthotel and its magnificent spa? We recommend having a look at this post.
