Trip to the Castell d’Alaró
Mallorca has sea, but also mountains. Sand, but also vegetation and roads infused with the beauty of the Mediterranean. On this island, you can find magical places both down at the beach and at the top of a mountain. In Mallorca, there are many ways to experience and enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountain range known as the Serra de Tramuntana.
The Castell d’Alaró is one of the most visited places by tourists and locals alike. It is a castle located at the highest part of the Puig d’Alaró. It is one of the most enjoyable places due to the spectacular views once you get to the top.
The Castell d'Alaró, with its beautiful scenery, is a place that receives thousands of visitors every year. With a height of 822 meters, it offers a perfect view of a large part of the island: from the Palma Bay to the Alcudia Bay and, of course, the huge Serra de Tramuntana.
The history of the Castell d’Alaró
The Castell d’Alaró dates back to 902. It was built with military purposes in mind, and the conquerors of the island used to stay there. In 1622, it became a place of worship when a chapel was built. It was declared a "Place of Cultural Interest" in 1931.
To this day, the castle wall and five towers remain. There is a first wall with an entrance to the castle. Further up you will get through a second entrance, which is also known as the "constipador" for giving visitors a cold.
Inside the castle, you can find the chapel of the Mare de Déu del Refugi, a hostelry, and five cisterns. A different tower, called the Prison of the Moors or the Tower of the Cave, stands over the Cave of San Antoni.
The different routes
There are different routes to explore and discover the wonders of the Castell d’Alaró. To get there, leave the village of Alaró and take the road to Bunyola, then take the second road to the left marked as Camí des Castell. The road is paved up to the Son Penyaflor estate and then leads to a cemented area up to the rural houses of Es Verger, where you can find a Mallorcan restaurant to try and enjoy the local food.
Past the restaurant, you will come to a sign indicating the way to either continue to the Pla del Pouet or to go to the castle. The best option is the second one, even though it is uphill all the way.
The good thing about the trip to the Castell d’Alarò is that you get to see wonderful views of the island. After an hour and a half (approximately) walking along a spectacular cobblestone road, you will arrive at the Castell d’Alarò.
The other options would be to depart from the village of Orient, located very close to Alarò, and to depart from different locations such as from the restaurant in Es Verger or from Es Pouet. All of them are good options to get to the top of this beautiful castle.
We at La Pérgola highly recommend you this trip: it is easy, beautiful, and suitable for the whole family.
