A Visit to Sa Comuna de Bunyola
Bunyola is one of the largest villages in Mallorca, situated to the south of the Tramontana Mountain range, in the northwest area of the island. This town boasts one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Balearic Islands, and its forest, Sa Comuna, is the largest on the island, featuring traces of the past that can be explored.
It not only attracts hikers and cyclists but is also a popular destination for students from nearly all the schools on the island and an ideal spot for a family Sunday outing.
Sa Comuna de Bunyola, Tramontana landscape
For years, Sa Comuna served as a resource for the residents of Bunyola, and today, it is like an open-air museum where you can observe and admire the way of life of the Mallorcans from days gone by. There are silos, bread and lime kilns, and cisterns that tell the story of the daily life of the farmers of that time.
It's also a wonderful place for hiking, mountain biking, or even climbing. Here, you'll find hundreds of pine trees, holm oaks, and scrubland that shape one of the lushest forests in Mallorca.
In Sa Comuna, there's a recreational area with a traditional cabin featuring a fireplace, stoves, tables, and chairs where you can spend a day in the great outdoors, whether by the warmth of the fire during the winter or outside when the weather is warm. It's open year-round, and you can inquire about its availability at the town hall.
Excursions in Sa Comuna de Bunyola
Due to its vastness, there are several routes to enjoy and revel in nature.
- -The ethnological itinerary covers the most historically significant spots in Sa Comuna. It's a relatively easy excursion that lasts about an hour and a half. The route includes three key points where you can visit remnants of silos, lime kilns, or charcoal burners' huts. It's a fascinating way to learn about resource utilization in days gone by.
- -The Penyal del Honor is for experienced hikers. It takes about six hours, and the difficulty level is moderate. You'll need to start from the village and venture into mountain trails that lead to the Penyal del Honor, which is located over 800 meters above sea level. This is the highest point in the commune and offers unbeatable views. Along the way, you can stop at several interesting points, such as the house built inside a cave or the old silos and cisterns.
- -The circular route of Sa Comuna is relatively easy but slightly longer than the first excursion, taking about two and a half hours to complete. It's the best route if you want to explore both the forest and some remnants of the area, like the charcoal burners' huts and silos. For more adventurous hikers, there's a fork that leads directly to the Penyal del Honor.
- -The Puig de na Marit and Cova de s'Aigua is a medium-difficulty hiking route lasting around three and a half hours. It's the perfect excursion to explore the flora and fauna of Bunyola and observe species like the royal kite, the distinctive Balearic genet, or the majestic black vulture. The first stop on the route leads to Puig de na Marit, where you can take a break before continuing. From here, you'll reach Sa Cova de s'Aigua, where various ceramic remnants can still be seen.
