Wednesdays, Date in Andratx to Explore its Market.
One of the pleasures of visiting a town is doing so on market day. The streets take on a different vibe, people come out to share chats and greetings, and the square fills with life. In Andratx, this day is Wednesdays, from eight in the morning to two in the afternoon on Passeig de Son Mas, and it's fantastic to take advantage of the date to visit other points of interest in the municipality.
Andratx Market: Typical Food According to the Season
The food stalls are well stocked with typical products from Mallorca, meaning locally sourced and grown or made directly by the person selling them.
In summer, it's a must to try peppers, tomatoes, sweet white onions, spring onions, or sofrito... It's the season for salads, trampó - diced peppers, onions, and tomatoes dressed - tumbet - a timbale made with potatoes and sliced and fried eggplants, onion, and fried tomato - and many other dishes of Mallorcan cuisine.
Winter is for chard, cabbages and cauliflowers, spinach, and the green vegetables that provide so many vitamins to the body. They can be prepared in soups, creams, sautéed to accompany meat... Or, of course, in the llom amb col mallorquín, loin with cabbage in English, whose sauce is also made with bacon, sobrasada, and butifarrón.
At the Andratx market, some bakeries set up their own stalls to offer attendees typical sweets such as ensaimadas, cremadillos or filled puff pastry, country bread - an essential - and empanadas, among other products.
Crafts, Leather Goods, and Clothing
Once you've explored the food stalls, it's time to delve into those selling clothing, crafts and gift items, and leather goods or fur.
It's true that you can find these products in practically all markets in Mallorca, but this doesn't make them any less special.
Artisans strive to display candles, ceramics, jewelry, incense, pieces of clothing and leather... because there are many visitors who know them and go directly to look for what they sell.
And it's because in the past, the market was the only way a small town had to connect with other populations and exchange gossip, products, or food.
And since we're in Andratx... what else can we visit?
In addition to strolling through the streets where the weekly market of Andratx is held, we can take the opportunity to visit some points of interest in the municipality.
- -In the old neighborhood of des Pantaleu, you will find the Sa Planeta mills or the So Na Gaiana tower, which is worth seeing.
- -The old Son Mas estate, currently the headquarters of the Andratx town hall, is a completely renovated castle adapted to the management of the municipality. Its walls and structure are admirable and little known.
- -The church of Santa María of Andratx is the religious focal point of the municipality.
And of course, beaches like Sant Elmo, the port of Andratx, Cala Egos, or Caló des Monjo are a must-visit, whether in summer or winter, when everything is quieter, and you can appreciate their beauty alone.
